Auld Lang Syne, nota in Italia come Valzer delle candele, oppure Il canto dell'addio nello scoutismo, è una canzone tradizionale diffusissima nei paesi di lingua inglese, dove viene cantata soprattutto nella notte di capodanno per dare l'addio al vecchio anno e in occasione di congedi, separazioni e addii (per esempio dai compagni di classe alla fine di un corso di studi, o dai commilitoni al termine del servizio militare, o dai colleghi di lavoro in occasione del pensionamento, o ancora per salutare gli amici conosciuti in vacanza al momento del rientro).
Il testo della canzone è un invito a ricordare con gratitudine i vecchi amici e il tempo lieto passato insieme a loro.
Il titolo della canzone, Auld Lang Syne, è un'espressione scozzese ormai accolta nei dizionari della lingua inglese, dove è tradotta letteralmente come "old long since", o, in modo meno letterale ma più corretto, "the good old days" nel senso de "i bei tempi andati".
La stesura della musica originale si fa risalire al musicista Davide Riccio (o Rizzio) cantore, liutista e compositore piemontese del Cinquecento che, al servizio di Casa Savoia, insieme al fratello Giuseppe si recò in Scozia a seguito della delegazione torinese nel 1561 e fu assunto al servizio di Maria Stuarda.
Nel mondo anglosassone è l'inno ufficiale del Capodanno. Intonato allo scoccare della mezzanotte nei pub e nelle case, suonato dalle orchestre e trasmesso dalle radio, Auld Lang Syne è una delle canzoni più celebri di tutti i tempi. Composta in Scozia e diffusa ormai ovunque, rappresenta uno di quei casi di "melodia universale" che spesso conosciamo senza nemmeno rendercene conto.
È diffusa anche in Italia, sia in versione originale che con il titolo di Valzer delle candele, in Francia come Ce n'est qu'un au revoir, negli Stati Uniti d'America come The New Year's Eve song.
In Corea del Sud è stata usata addirittura come inno nazionale, fino al 1948.
La composizione del brano è storicamente attribuita a Robert Burns, poeta scozzese vissuto nel 1700. Fu infatti Burns a pubblicarne per la prima volta le parole, all'interno della raccolta Select Collection of Original Scottish Airs for The Voice (1799) realizzata insieme all'amico George Thomson. Burns, però, non ne rivendicò mai la paternità.
In una lettera inviata allo Scots Musical Museum la definì infatti «una canzone dei tempi antichi, mai stampata né pubblicata prima, che io stesso trascrissi dalle parole di un vecchio».
Sempre Burns, in un'altra missiva, descrivendo l'effetto che il primo ascolto di "Auld Lang Syne" ebbe su di lui, disse che aveva "attraversato come un fremito la sua anima".
Più probabilmente, Burns unì in un unico testo diverse poesie popolari diffuse all'epoca nelle campagne scozzesi.
Versi molto simili si ritrovano infatti in componimenti anteriori al poeta - ad esempio, nella ballata "Old Long Syne" scritta nel 1711 da James Watson, o in alcuni frammenti di Robert Ayton e Allan Ramsay.
Il testo di Auld Lang Syne, scritto in antico dialetto scozzese, è ancora oggi soggetto a disparate interpretazioni.
Anche il titolo viene tradotto con accezioni diverse: la corrente più comune, oggi, lo legge come "Old Long Since" ("Tanto tempo da quando.."), una sorta di "c'era una volta" che richiama ai "bei tempi andati".
Auld Lang Syne narra la storia di un'amicizia interrotta, riconciliata (nella notte di San Silvestro?) da un brindisi fraterno.

Auld Lang Syne, nota in Italia come Valzer delle candele, oppure Il canto dell'addio nello scoutismo, è una canzone tradizionale diffusissima nei paesi di lingua inglese, dove viene cantata soprattutto nella notte di capodanno per dare l'addio al vecchio anno e in occasione di congedi, separazioni e addii (per esempio dai compagni di classe alla fine di un corso di studi, o dai commilitoni al termine del servizio militare, o dai colleghi di lavoro in occasione del pensionamento, o ancora per salutare gli amici conosciuti in vacanza al momento del rientro).
Il testo della canzone è un invito a ricordare con gratitudine i vecchi amici e il tempo lieto passato insieme a loro.
Il titolo della canzone, Auld Lang Syne, è un'espressione scozzese ormai accolta nei dizionari della lingua inglese, dove è tradotta letteralmente come "old long since", o, in modo meno letterale ma più corretto, "the good old days" nel senso de "i bei tempi andati".
La stesura della musica originale si fa risalire al musicista Davide Riccio (o Rizzio) cantore, liutista e compositore piemontese del Cinquecento che, al servizio di Casa Savoia, insieme al fratello Giuseppe si recò in Scozia a seguito della delegazione torinese nel 1561 e fu assunto al servizio di Maria Stuarda.
Nel mondo anglosassone è l'inno ufficiale del Capodanno. Intonato allo scoccare della mezzanotte nei pub e nelle case, suonato dalle orchestre e trasmesso dalle radio, Auld Lang Syne è una delle canzoni più celebri di tutti i tempi. Composta in Scozia e diffusa ormai ovunque, rappresenta uno di quei casi di "melodia universale" che spesso conosciamo senza nemmeno rendercene conto.
È diffusa anche in Italia, sia in versione originale che con il titolo di Valzer delle candele, in Francia come Ce n'est qu'un au revoir, negli Stati Uniti d'America come The New Year's Eve song.
In Corea del Sud è stata usata addirittura come inno nazionale, fino al 1948.
La composizione del brano è storicamente attribuita a Robert Burns, poeta scozzese vissuto nel 1700. Fu infatti Burns a pubblicarne per la prima volta le parole, all'interno della raccolta Select Collection of Original Scottish Airs for The Voice (1799) realizzata insieme all'amico George Thomson. Burns, però, non ne rivendicò mai la paternità.
In una lettera inviata allo Scots Musical Museum la definì infatti «una canzone dei tempi antichi, mai stampata né pubblicata prima, che io stesso trascrissi dalle parole di un vecchio».
Sempre Burns, in un'altra missiva, descrivendo l'effetto che il primo ascolto di "Auld Lang Syne" ebbe su di lui, disse che aveva "attraversato come un fremito la sua anima".
Più probabilmente, Burns unì in un unico testo diverse poesie popolari diffuse all'epoca nelle campagne scozzesi.
Versi molto simili si ritrovano infatti in componimenti anteriori al poeta - ad esempio, nella ballata "Old Long Syne" scritta nel 1711 da James Watson, o in alcuni frammenti di Robert Ayton e Allan Ramsay.
Il testo di Auld Lang Syne, scritto in antico dialetto scozzese, è ancora oggi soggetto a disparate interpretazioni.
Anche il titolo viene tradotto con accezioni diverse: la corrente più comune, oggi, lo legge come "Old Long Since" ("Tanto tempo da quando.."), una sorta di "c'era una volta" che richiama ai "bei tempi andati".
Auld Lang Syne narra la storia di un'amicizia interrotta, riconciliata (nella notte di San Silvestro?) da un brindisi fraterno.
