This is a video showing Bronx Born Jerry Orbach performing the song "Try To Remember" from the longest running musical play in history - The Fantasticks. Jerry Orbach was one of the original cast members who played "El Gallo" and was the first to perform this show's well known song. The video includes photos of most of the current cast members from the Friday, April 18, 2014 performance (Samantha Bruce, Donald Corren, MacIntyre Dixon, Jeremiah James, and Jim Schubin).

(1962) - Try to Remember is a song from the musical comedy "The Fantasticks". It is the first song sung in the show, to get the audience to imagine what the sparse set suggests. Its lyrics, written by Tom Jones, famously rhyme "remember" with "September", "so tender", and "December." Harvey Schmidt composed the music.
Try to Remember was originally sung by Jerry Orbach in the Original Off Broadway production of "The Fantasticks". "Try To Remember" made the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart three times in 1965 in versions by Ed Ames, Roger Williams and the The Brothers Four. However, in 1975, Gladys Knight & The Pips had a huge international hit with their version of "Try to Remember," combining it into a medley with a cover of Barbra Streisand's "The Way We Were". It reached #11 on the Hot 100 chart. In Knight's version, she recited some of the lyrics from "Try To Remember" in spoken-word fashion before beginning to sing "The Way We Were." The Greek singer Nana Mouskouri also recorded it in three languages: German, French, and Italian.
Try to Remember was also used in the soundtrack of the film "The Man Who Fell to Earth", the video game "Chrono Trigger", and the Hong Kong film "City of Glass (Boli zhi cheng)".

On June 13, 1960, MGM Records made a recording of an off-Broadway musical by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt called The Fantasticks. At the time, the production was struggling to stay alive, and producer Lore Noto thought a cast recording might help generate more interest and some extra revenue. Since then, The Fantasticks has maintained a strong presence on the theatrical community, having broken every longevity record for a musical production. Jerry Orbach sang Try And Remember in this first production of The Fantasticks. Along with this are the top 15 best male Broadway performers of all time.

The group was founded in the early 1960s in Jersey City, New Jersey by William L. Dickinson High School students Michael Arnone, Joe Santollo, John Salvato, Tom Bialoglow, and lead singer Joey Canzano (later known as Joey Vann).
Sadly, Joe Santollo died in 1981, Joey Vann died in 1984 and Mike Arnone died in 2005! We all love & miss you guys, thanks for all these super great tunes you left all of us, what a treasure!!!
On November 6, 2008 the Duprees were officially inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame honoring the original members. Tommy Bialoglow performed and accepted the Harmony Award.

This clip is from the first time I first played El Gallo in Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt's immortal musical "THE FANTASTICKS," in a beautiful conceived and spectacularly successful production at The Cleveland Playhouse, over the Christmas Holidays in 1987-88. In the 73 year history of The Cleveland Playhouse, our production of "The Fantasticks" was the first show to ever sell-out ithe entire run before it even opened. I met librettist Tom Jones and composer Harvey Schmidt on December 1, 1987, the opening night of that production. Less than a year later, in the fall of 1988, I was honored when they cast me to play El Gallo again, this time under Toms direction, with Harvey as musical director, in The First International Japan Tour of the show. It was twelve weeks in Heaven, off-stage as well as on. Not only did Tom direct, he also recreated his original role as The Old Actor. And Harvey was on stage with us, at the piano, playing his own music as only Harvey can, at every performance. [That's Harvey playing "Try To Remember" at the beginning and end of this clip, an excerpt from a track on his wonderful CD "Harvey Schmidt Plays Jones & Schmidt" recorded at his Tomball, Texas studio on the occasion of his 75th Birthday, September 12, 2004, and now available from Krtizerland.]. I recently had the honor of singing "Try To Remember" once again, and sharing the stage with Susan Watson, Rita Gardner, Martin Vidnovic, Kelly Sullivan, Barbara Dana and other Jones & Schmidt alumni in another once-in-a-lifetime event; the spectacular multi-media tribute "Remeber & Celebrate: Honoring Tom Jones & Harvey Schmidt" on the occasion of their receiving The William Inge Distinguished Achievement in The American Theatre Award, on April 25th, 2009, on the stage of The William Inge Theatre in Independence, Kansas. I don't have a clip of that event to post yet, but I remembered this New Years Day TV Special, filmed on the set of "The Fantasticks" at The Cleveland Playhouse, from 1987, one month after I first met Tom & Harvey. The show had been booked for a limited run, but received such rave notices and such an unexpected demand for tickets that it was extended -- twice! Jack Eddleman, an actor in such Broadway shows as "Camelot," "The Girl Who Came To Supper," "Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris" Off-Broadway, and esteemed director of musical, plays and operas including "Turandot" at City Opera and a national tour of "Carousel" in which I had previously starred as Billy Bigelow [subsequently Zinnowitz/Prysing in the International Tour of "Grand Hotel"] directed the innovative production, and his wife, the lovely Stephanie Hall Eddleman ["Carousel", "The Sarasota Ballet"] choreographed. Buddy Crutchfield [later in the Broadway revival of "The Most Happy Fella"] was a terrific Matt, and the exquisite Marcy DeGonge [now Marcy DeGonge Manfredi], who went on to make her Broadway bow in "CATS" and subsequently played Carlotta [Judy Kayes original role] in "Phantom of the Opera"] received stunning notices and was a lovely Luisa.

This is a video showing Bronx Born Jerry Orbach performing the song "Try To Remember" from the longest running musical play in history - The Fantasticks. Jerry Orbach was one of the original cast members who played "El Gallo" and was the first to perform this show's well known song. The video includes photos of most of the current cast members from the Friday, April 18, 2014 performance (Samantha Bruce, Donald Corren, MacIntyre Dixon, Jeremiah James, and Jim Schubin).

(1962) - Try to Remember is a song from the musical comedy "The Fantasticks". It is the first song sung in the show, to get the audience to imagine what the sparse set suggests. Its lyrics, written by Tom Jones, famously rhyme "remember" with "September", "so tender", and "December." Harvey Schmidt composed the music.
Try to Remember was originally sung by Jerry Orbach in the Original Off Broadway production of "The Fantasticks". "Try To Remember" made the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart three times in 1965 in versions by Ed Ames, Roger Williams and the The Brothers Four. However, in 1975, Gladys Knight & The Pips had a huge international hit with their version of "Try to Remember," combining it into a medley with a cover of Barbra Streisand's "The Way We Were". It reached #11 on the Hot 100 chart. In Knight's version, she recited some of the lyrics from "Try To Remember" in spoken-word fashion before beginning to sing "The Way We Were." The Greek singer Nana Mouskouri also recorded it in three languages: German, French, and Italian.
Try to Remember was also used in the soundtrack of the film "The Man Who Fell to Earth", the video game "Chrono Trigger", and the Hong Kong film "City of Glass (Boli zhi cheng)".

On June 13, 1960, MGM Records made a recording of an off-Broadway musical by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt called The Fantasticks. At the time, the production was struggling to stay alive, and producer Lore Noto thought a cast recording might help generate more interest and some extra revenue. Since then, The Fantasticks has maintained a strong presence on the theatrical community, having broken every longevity record for a musical production. Jerry Orbach sang Try And Remember in this first production of The Fantasticks. Along with this are the top 15 best male Broadway performers of all time.

The group was founded in the early 1960s in Jersey City, New Jersey by William L. Dickinson High School students Michael Arnone, Joe Santollo, John Salvato, Tom Bialoglow, and lead singer Joey Canzano (later known as Joey Vann).
Sadly, Joe Santollo died in 1981, Joey Vann died in 1984 and Mike Arnone died in 2005! We all love & miss you guys, thanks for all these super great tunes you left all of us, what a treasure!!!
On November 6, 2008 the Duprees were officially inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame honoring the original members. Tommy Bialoglow performed and accepted the Harmony Award.

This clip is from the first time I first played El Gallo in Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt's immortal musical "THE FANTASTICKS," in a beautiful conceived and spectacularly successful production at The Cleveland Playhouse, over the Christmas Holidays in 1987-88. In the 73 year history of The Cleveland Playhouse, our production of "The Fantasticks" was the first show to ever sell-out ithe entire run before it even opened. I met librettist Tom Jones and composer Harvey Schmidt on December 1, 1987, the opening night of that production. Less than a year later, in the fall of 1988, I was honored when they cast me to play El Gallo again, this time under Toms direction, with Harvey as musical director, in The First International Japan Tour of the show. It was twelve weeks in Heaven, off-stage as well as on. Not only did Tom direct, he also recreated his original role as The Old Actor. And Harvey was on stage with us, at the piano, playing his own music as only Harvey can, at every performance. [That's Harvey playing "Try To Remember" at the beginning and end of this clip, an excerpt from a track on his wonderful CD "Harvey Schmidt Plays Jones & Schmidt" recorded at his Tomball, Texas studio on the occasion of his 75th Birthday, September 12, 2004, and now available from Krtizerland.]. I recently had the honor of singing "Try To Remember" once again, and sharing the stage with Susan Watson, Rita Gardner, Martin Vidnovic, Kelly Sullivan, Barbara Dana and other Jones & Schmidt alumni in another once-in-a-lifetime event; the spectacular multi-media tribute "Remeber & Celebrate: Honoring Tom Jones & Harvey Schmidt" on the occasion of their receiving The William Inge Distinguished Achievement in The American Theatre Award, on April 25th, 2009, on the stage of The William Inge Theatre in Independence, Kansas. I don't have a clip of that event to post yet, but I remembered this New Years Day TV Special, filmed on the set of "The Fantasticks" at The Cleveland Playhouse, from 1987, one month after I first met Tom & Harvey. The show had been booked for a limited run, but received such rave notices and such an unexpected demand for tickets that it was extended -- twice! Jack Eddleman, an actor in such Broadway shows as "Camelot," "The Girl Who Came To Supper," "Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris" Off-Broadway, and esteemed director of musical, plays and operas including "Turandot" at City Opera and a national tour of "Carousel" in which I had previously starred as Billy Bigelow [subsequently Zinnowitz/Prysing in the International Tour of "Grand Hotel"] directed the innovative production, and his wife, the lovely Stephanie Hall Eddleman ["Carousel", "The Sarasota Ballet"] choreographed. Buddy Crutchfield [later in the Broadway revival of "The Most Happy Fella"] was a terrific Matt, and the exquisite Marcy DeGonge [now Marcy DeGonge Manfredi], who went on to make her Broadway bow in "CATS" and subsequently played Carlotta [Judy Kayes original role] in "Phantom of the Opera"] received stunning notices and was a lovely Luisa.
