Procol Harum - Gary Brooker
A Whiter Shade Of Pale
Μουσική - Στίχοι: Gary Brooker-Keith Reid-Matthew Fisher
--------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------
We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
And the waiter brought a tray

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

She said, "There is no reason
And the truth is plain to see."
But I wandered through my playing cards
And they would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open wide
They might have just as well been closed

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

She said, "I'm here on a shore leave,"
Though we were miles at sea.
I pointed out this detail
And forced her to agree,
Saying, "You must be the mermaid
Who took King Neptune for a ride."
And she smiled at me so sweetly
That my anger straightway died.

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

If music be the food of love
Then laughter is it's queen
And likewise if behind is in front
Then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
Seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
And attacked the ocean bed

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

Live at the Union Chapel
British rock legends Procol Harum are captured here at their finest, in concert at London's Union Chapel. It was the last night of a tour that had taken them from London through Europe, Japan and North America and back again to London and the band celebrated with a truly magical performance of the rarely heard full version of the immortal A Whiter Shade Of Pale.
This performance is taken from the full length concert DVD "Live at the Union Chapel", available from Eagle Vision now.

"The Anthology ... So Far - Disc 3 -- 12. A Whiter Shade of Pale"
"The Anthology... So Far" is a triple live compilation album by Ringo Starr which was released in 2001. Rounding up the bulk of the material on "1990's Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band" and "1993's Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band Volume 2: Live From Montreux" - in addition to previously unheard material recorded live in 1995, 1997 and 2000, "The Anthology... So Far" stands as an exhaustive collection of Starr's concert highlights spanning a decade.

Over the course of the collection Starr is joined by Randy Bachman, Gary Brooker, Jack Bruce, Tim Cappello, Eric Carmen, Felix Cavaliere, Clarence Clemons, Burton Cummings, Rick Danko, Dr. John, Dave Edmunds, John Entwistle, Mark Farner, Peter Frampton, Levon Helm, Jim Keltner, Simon Kirke, Nils Lofgren, Billy Preston, Mark Rivera, Todd Rundgren, Timothy B. Schmit, Zak Starkey and Joe Walsh.

Critically well-received, The Anthology... So Far failed to reach the charts upon its release.

1967
Sono state inoltre incise versioni in francese (Le Jour du Dernier Jour), tedesco (Tränen im Gesicht), svedese (Då Är Hon Åter Lika Blek), portoghese (Ao Meu Lado Outra Vez), spagnolo (Con Su Blanca Palidez) e finlandese (Merisairaat kasvo).
Originariamente la canzone era attribuita ai soli Gary Brooker e Keith Reid. Nel 2005 Matthew Fisher intentò una causa vittoriosa contro Gary Brooker sostenendo di aver collaborato a scrivere le musiche.

Former Procul Harum drummer Bobby Harrison and its former organist Matthew Fisher, who co-wrote the monster hit, made rock history performing the group's mega hit at Holy Trinity parish church, Rayleigh, on August 21, 2010.

I was honoured to be invited by Bobby and Matthew to record the event.

A night to remember, in aid of the ancient church's restoration fund, included A Whiter Shade of Pale, performed in public for the first time by Bobby and Matthew since the swinging 60s .

They were supported by the talented guys from Journey2Freedom Phil guitar, Dave drums, Maddy keyboard and Stuart bass.

A Whiter Shade of Pale held number one spot for six weeks in the UK singles chart in 1967, its Bach-flavoured melody composed by Matthew, who also co-wrote The Wreck of the Hesperus, Long Gone Geek, Glimpse of Nirvana, and Quite Rightly So, with other members of the band.

Would it not be a humungus milestone in rock history, were Gary Brooker to join Matthew Fisher and Bobby Harrison and other members Procol Harum to play A Whiter Shade of Pale?

The song sold 10 millions since it was released in 1967 so isnt it now time all these legendary musicians put the past behind them, just like Robbie and Take That, and performed in harmony again?

Thumbs up to a fantastic Procul Harum re-union then!

Former Procul Harum drummer Bobby Harrison made rock history with the organist who co-wrote their mega hit that is more played in Britain than Bohemian Rhapsody.

Forever young Harrison performed 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' for the first time with keyboard player Matthew Fisher since the late 60s at a gig at Rayleigh parish church, Essex in August 2010.

The song held number on spot for six weeks in the UK singles chart in 1967, its Bach-flavoured melody composed by Matthew Fisher, who also co-wrote The Wreck of the Hesperus, Long Gone Geek, Glimpse of Nirvana, and Quite Rightly So, with other members of the band.

Bobby Harrison, filmed here in an English-theme pub in Rekjavik, Iceland, tells Matthew Fisher about his life and times as set out in his newly published sex, drugs and rock n roll autobiography Journey to Freedom.

We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
And the waiter brought a tray

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

She said, "There is no reason
And the truth is plain to see."
But I wandered through my playing cards
And they would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open wide
They might have just as well been closed

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

She said, "I'm here on a shore leave,"
Though we were miles at sea.
I pointed out this detail
And forced her to agree,
Saying, "You must be the mermaid
Who took King Neptune for a ride."
And she smiled at me so sweetly
That my anger straightway died.

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

If music be the food of love
Then laughter is it's queen
And likewise if behind is in front
Then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
Seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
And attacked the ocean bed

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

On March 1 2013 singer and pianist Antonio Costa Barbé invites Jack Ponissi and Mauro Roasio from SormoRock to perform a few tunes with him during one of his "Fifty years of Music" concerts held at at Trattoria San Marco in Novara.

During these concerts Antonio performs several songs that have been significative during his musical journey, as a long time Procol Harum fan A Whiter Shade of Pale just has to be played.

This performance, completely unrehearsed, features Jack Ponissi on Hammond Organ and Mauro Roasio on Guitar.

Jack Ponissi, based in the western city of Turin and notable illeist, is the founder of Sormorock, the only demi-PH-tribute in Italy, with whom Antonio had performed a set back in October.
The two of them would perform together for a third time on April 6th in Wuppertal, Germany, when a lose international collective of musicians named "The Paler's Band" would gather to perform the music of Procol Harum for the "Echoes In The Night" convention.

Mauro Roasio is from the Turin area as well but back in the '70s used to live in Novara and perform with Antonio in the band "Fuochi Fatui". He returned in Turin in the '80s and now occasionally performs the music of Procol Harum with Sormorock. The Sormorock Jazz Club Set in October was the first time he had played on stage with Antonio since the '70s and this is probably his first performance of the song in decades.
