Procol Harum - Gary Brooker
A Whiter Shade Of Pale
Μουσική - Στίχοι: Gary Brooker-Keith Reid-Matthew Fisher
--------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------
Live at Dalhalla, Sweden, June 30 2007.
--------------------------------------------
We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
And the waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, "There is no reason
And the truth is plain to see."
But I wandered through my playing cards
And they would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open wide
They might have just as well been closed
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, "I'm here on a shore leave,"
Though we were miles at sea.
I pointed out this detail
And forced her to agree,
Saying, "You must be the mermaid
Who took King Neptune for a ride."
And she smiled at me so sweetly
That my anger straightway died.
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
If music be the food of love
Then laughter is it's queen
And likewise if behind is in front
Then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
Seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
And attacked the ocean bed
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

About The Lyrics: Gary Brooker, Matthew Fisher, and Keith Reid are all credited for the writing of the lyrics...Reid got the title and the starting point for the song at a party. He overheard someone at the party saying to a woman, "You've turned a whiter shade of pale," and the phrase stuck in his mind. The original lyrics had four verses, of which only two are heard on the original recording. Claes Johansen, suggests that the song "deals in metaphorical form with a male/female relationship which after some negotiation ends in a sexual act. This song has been described as the "greatest acid lyric ever written" and it has often been associated with the evolving hippie scene of 1967. But Reid does reject this idea & has stated he never took acid when he wrote the lyrics, he called that theory "psychedelic blabber" It's like a jigsaw where you've got one piece, then you make up all the others to fit in. Reid also said the he was trying to conjure a mood as much as tell a straightforward, girl-leaves-boy story. With the ceiling flying away and room humming harder, I wanted to paint an image of a scene. I wasn't trying to be mysterious with those images, I wasn't trying to be evocative...

The crowd is waiting for the bullfight
Matador
My final fight the place is packed once more
Anita won't throw me a rose this fight
The one she wears is not for me tonight
She's watching now with her new love I know
Walk proud and slow
Be strong and sure give the crowd their show
They want blood you know!
You're still their idol as you were before
Kill just one more!
Remind Anita, you're the greatest Matador
Walk on out, forget Anita in the stands
Be a tall and brave and noble man
Be better than you've ever been before
Make this you're greatest moment Matador
She's watching now with her new love I know
Walk proud and slow
Be strong and sure give the crowd a show
They want blood you know!
You're still their idol as you were before
Kill just one more!

Procol Harum - Gary Brooker
A Whiter Shade Of Pale
Μουσική - Στίχοι: Gary Brooker-Keith Reid-Matthew Fisher
--------------------------------------------
Live at Dalhalla, Sweden, June 30 2007.
--------------------------------------------
We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
And the waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, "There is no reason
And the truth is plain to see."
But I wandered through my playing cards
And they would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open wide
They might have just as well been closed
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, "I'm here on a shore leave,"
Though we were miles at sea.
I pointed out this detail
And forced her to agree,
Saying, "You must be the mermaid
Who took King Neptune for a ride."
And she smiled at me so sweetly
That my anger straightway died.
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
If music be the food of love
Then laughter is it's queen
And likewise if behind is in front
Then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
Seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
And attacked the ocean bed
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

About The Lyrics: Gary Brooker, Matthew Fisher, and Keith Reid are all credited for the writing of the lyrics...Reid got the title and the starting point for the song at a party. He overheard someone at the party saying to a woman, "You've turned a whiter shade of pale," and the phrase stuck in his mind. The original lyrics had four verses, of which only two are heard on the original recording. Claes Johansen, suggests that the song "deals in metaphorical form with a male/female relationship which after some negotiation ends in a sexual act. This song has been described as the "greatest acid lyric ever written" and it has often been associated with the evolving hippie scene of 1967. But Reid does reject this idea & has stated he never took acid when he wrote the lyrics, he called that theory "psychedelic blabber" It's like a jigsaw where you've got one piece, then you make up all the others to fit in. Reid also said the he was trying to conjure a mood as much as tell a straightforward, girl-leaves-boy story. With the ceiling flying away and room humming harder, I wanted to paint an image of a scene. I wasn't trying to be mysterious with those images, I wasn't trying to be evocative...

The crowd is waiting for the bullfight
Matador
My final fight the place is packed once more
Anita won't throw me a rose this fight
The one she wears is not for me tonight
She's watching now with her new love I know
Walk proud and slow
Be strong and sure give the crowd their show
They want blood you know!
You're still their idol as you were before
Kill just one more!
Remind Anita, you're the greatest Matador
Walk on out, forget Anita in the stands
Be a tall and brave and noble man
Be better than you've ever been before
Make this you're greatest moment Matador
She's watching now with her new love I know
Walk proud and slow
Be strong and sure give the crowd a show
They want blood you know!
You're still their idol as you were before
Kill just one more!
Remind Anita, you're the greatest Matador

Aye, To-re-ro, she is here,
Aye, Matador
I feel her eyes,
They are wide with excitement and fear
I feel her heart
For it cries when the horns are too near,
I will be bold,
Brave and swift will I be,
And I will be nu-mer-o u-no
To-re-ro fi-no
She'll dream tonight of me
Aye, Matador
I feel her eyes,
They are wide with excitement and fear
I feel her heart
For it cries when the horns are too near,
I will be bold,
Brave and swift will I be,
And I will be nu-mer-o u-no
To-re-ro fi-no
She'll dream tonight of me
O-le, o-le, o-le!
Viva el Matador!
O-le, o-le, o-le!
Viva el Matador!
Viva el Matador!
O-le, o-le, o-le!
Viva el Matador!
Aye, To-re-ro, she is here,
Aye, Matador
I see her smile
And I see there the reason she came,
To-ro, come closer,
Come hear and I'll whisper her name
You may be brave,
And as bold as you're black
But I will be nu-mer-o u-no,
To-re-ro fi-no,
To--ro, come back
Aye, Matador
I see her smile
And I see there the reason she came,
To-ro, come closer,
Come hear and I'll whisper her name
You may be brave,
And as bold as you're black
But I will be nu-mer-o u-no,
To-re-ro fi-no,
To--ro, come back
O-le, o-le, o-le!
Viva el Matador!
O-le, o-le, o-le!
Viva el Matador!
Viva el Matador!
O-le, o-le, o-le!
Viva el Matador!
O-le, o-le, ole!
Viva el Matador!
O-le, o-le, o-le!
Viva el Matador!
